Equipment List

As you begin your transition from horse enthusiast to equine professional, it becomes necessary to begin assembling your own personal equipment. This equipment will assist you while a student at AU, but will also be the tools of the trade you will need when working in the industry. The program does have equipment for students to use, however, as you progress, the expectation is for you to be building your collection of equipment. The required equipment is broken down in several sections; required and recommended; as well as by the time frame for purchase. This is in an attempt to make the acquisition of this equipment possible over time. If you already own some or all of this equipment-Congratulations-you are ahead of the game!

Required Freshman Year:

1. Riding Clothing
2. Gloves
3. Hair net
4. Tall Riding Boots--preferably leather
5. Breeches and belt
6. Approved helmet--ASTM/SEI
7. Suitable shirts, jackets, or sweaters.  Please - no tank tops or vulgar messages.
8. Show jacket - black is strongly recommended, for competitors only
9. Cross-country vest : recommended for HM III and above
                                                            required for fundamentals of eventing and above

Riding Equipment

1. Polo wraps
2. Whips--both long (dressage) and short (jumping)
3. Front and rear set of Gallop (protective) boots

Tack / Boot Cleaning Kit

Recommended Sophomore Year for all Instruction of Dressage/Eventing  Majors

Riding/Training Equipment
Dressage or Eventing saddle
Appropriate girth for style saddle

Stirrup leathers and irons

            4.            Dressage bridle with flash attachment
            5.            5 1/2” oval double jointed loose ring snaffle (with a bean not a link)
            6.            Saddle pads- 2 square dressage pads or 1 dressage and 1 event pad
            7.            Rubber reins (Eventing only)
            8.            Mattes pad (any sheepskin will do)

1. Shipping Boots

Required Sophomore Year

            1.            Lungeline without chain
            2.            Lunge whip
            3.            Side reins with donut
           
Optional Equipment
            1.            Curcingle
            2.             Lunging cavesson
            3.            Running Martingale
            4.            Breast plate    
           
           
Students should bring one footlocker with a combination lock.  Lockers/trunks should be less than 3’ high and 2’ wide.
 
It is recommended that students bring a small knapsack, caddy or bucket for grooming equipment.

**All students must have a cross-country vest before taking 200 (or above) level eventing classes or participating on the CT team.

The Equestrian Studies Department suggests the following for the protection of equipment:

1.         Make a list of all tack and equipment that you will have in the stable and keep your record in your room.

2.         Mark clearly all belongings with your name.

3.         Bring a combination lock for your footlocker.

NOTE: The Equestrian Studies Department will not be responsible for lost or stolen 
             equipment so mark your belongings and keep your trunk locked.
