Mary B. Blount

Mary B. Blount by Charles Postelle. The original is displayed in the Library.

Mary Blanche Craghead Blount was born April 8, 1899, in Franklin County, Va. Valedictorian of her high school class, she later attended Farmville and Radford Teacher's colleges. She taught in Bedford county public school for four years before marrying David S. Blount, Sr.

Mrs. Blount was elected to the Averett College Board of Trustees in 1968 and, in that same year, added a codicil to her will pledging $600,000 for construction of the Mary B. Blount Library at Averett College.

Designed by Calvert, Lewis and Smith (Danville architects), the library was dedicated in June 1972. It was built by John W. Daniel Co. for $665,000 and provided over 27,500 square feet of space on three floors to house the college's book collections.
