Faculty and Staff Members of the Year Announced

May 10, 2010

Averett University is pleased to announce its 2009-10 Outstanding Faculty and Outstanding Staff members of the year. Dr. Ann Garbett, English professor, and Dr. Susan Huckstep, director of public relations, were named Outstanding Faculty and Outstanding Staff member respectively.

Garbett retired this spring after teaching at the university for more than 30 years. During her tenure, she served on numerous committees, including the Arts@Averett Committee. She is also heavily involved in the community, serving as a member of the Shakespeare Club, the Danville Historical Society and the Danville Concert Association. She is also a member of two poetry groups. One of the nominations for Garbett described her as "an excellent professor" who was "conscientious, demanding, but fair" and generous with her time, talents and support.

Huckstep, an alumna of Averett, has worked at the university for almost 18 years as director of public relations. She has chaired or co-chaired numerous committees at the university and has served on Staff Council numerous times, most recently as secretary. One of her nominations described her as "the face and voice of Averett" and as someone "who shows unwavering support and commitment to the university." Huckstep is active in the community and has worked with Project Literacy, the GEAR-UP program with Danville Public Schools and Leadership Southside Advisory Board.
